Rhododendron of the Year:2004 Great Lakes and South Central, 2006 North East

One of the best forms of R. degronianum ssp. yakushimanum known for its appealing foliage (heavily indumented) and its richly colored pink flowers.  Flower deep purplish pink, ages to white, upper lobe spotted green, openly funnel-shaped, 2½” across.  Held in compact trusses of 13 to 17 flowers.  Blooms midseason.  Leaves oblanceolate, re-curved, dark green with thick indumentum beneath.  Compact, mounding plant.  Grows twice as wide as high.  Typical height: 4 ft. in 10 years.  Cold hardy to -15°F (-26°C).  This is the only yakushimanum selection to receive an Award of Excellence (1969).  There is continuing debate as to whether the plant is a variety of the species or is a hybrid containing R. smirnowii or another species.  Selected by Janeck.
